Why are priests celibate?

Celibacy is one of the most widely recognized characteristics of a Roman Catholic priest. But though it is well known, celibacy itself is often misunderstood. Technically, celibacy is the commitment not to marry. In the Latin (Roman) Catholic Church, it is a prerequisite for ordination to the priesthood. The candidate must freely assume this obligation publicly and for life.

I was away from the office when news of the racy photos of Father Alberto Cutie (CU-ti-ay) broke; the Miami priest who runs (or used to run) a Catholic media outlet along with a parish in the Miami archdiocese, is now appearing on CBS' The Early Show. What's most surprising to me about the news coverage: the lack of outrage among the faithful.

OMG as the young folks text nowadays. The new president of Paraguay, a former bishop, has admitted to fathering one woman's child, and today it comes out he admits that "it's possible" he could have fathered the child of at least one other.

The headline may overstate the case a bit, but Archbishop Edward Egan's acknowledgment in a talk radio interview that the Catholic Church ought to consider married clergy is kind of a big deal: "I think [the celibacy rule] has to be looked at.
