Colbert, Kmiec, and the marriage question

Stephen Colbert, the Catholic, defended the institution of marriage against the conservative-growing-more-liberal-everyday Douglas Kmiec. Kmiec’s argument: leave marriage to religion and acknowledge civil unions for everybody legally. It’s an interesting argument, based on a strict separation of church and state, though no doubt controversial.

The topic may be serious, but the interview [1] is just plain funny. Colbert unintentionally cracks himself up—the first time I’ve seen him get close to going out of character.
