Weekly roundup: Reality nuns, radio ad, and the pledge of allegiance

Uncategorized

He is risen!

After the 40 days of Lent, we have arrived at Easter. And just in case you spent the week swimming in the chocolate that you deprived yourself of all season, this is your weekly roundup.

First for the big news in reality (television, that is.) Television network Lifetime is launching a reality television series called The Sisterhood. The show, produced by Hot Snakes Media (you read that right) will follow five young women during their discernment process. Will they or won’t they? I guess we’ll have to watch to find out.

The Pledge of Allegiance is under some scrutiny (again)–this time in New Jersey, where the American Humanist Association is suing a public school district for its recitation of the pledge, claiming that it is discriminatory against non-believers thanks to the phrase “under God.”

In New York, Cardinal Dolan and lay group Catholic Voices have launched a radio ad blitz to try to get lapsed Catholics back to the pews.

In Missouri, the Catholic bishops have said “Enough is enough” when it comes to executions. Since November, the state has executed one prisoner per month, and another is scheduled to be executed later this month.

In Florida, we have some good news. Pressure put on companies like McDonald’s and Yum Brands has resulted in better working conditions for migrant workers who pick tomatoes.

And now for the Papal rapid fire roundup:

This week, Pope Francis:

  • Called a divorced woman and told her that she could take communion. Maybe? Okay yes but don’t read too much into it.
  • Will canonize Popes John XXIII and John Paul II.
  • Wants to make us better people, according to President Obama.

And that’s it for this week. Enjoy the weekend, and be sure to let us know what you think about raising the minimum wage.
