America the Twitter feed

Uncategorized

So yesterday was the tremendous sporting and television event known as Super Bowl Sunday, and with the game came all of the hyped-up $4 million for 30-seconds commercials. But the ad that caused the most fizz seemed to be the ad by Coca-Cola, which featured the song "America the beautiful" sung in a number of languages, English among them.

The Twitter-storm that erupted as a result of the ad may have been predictable, but it was disappointing nonetheless. If you did not see the language that was thrown around on Twitter last night, I won't treat you to it here. What I will treat you to, though, are the lyrics to the song that produced so much outrage on social media last night.

Oh beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
