Immaculate Conception

Tuesday, December 8, 2009
By Anonymous

You certainly know how many people (including many Catholics) think the name of this feast refers to Our Lady's virginity.  Attending the Mass today, I got to wonder who and why had chosen the Gospel reading:  it is about the Annunciation, and the key part of it is Mary's question about how She can conceive without the participation of a man, and the Messenger's reassurance. <!--break-->

In other words, the Gospel is not about the conception of Mary but about the conception of Jesus,  Perhaps the highly positioned churchmen who chose today's (Dec. 8) Gospel text were guided by the popular understandimg instead of by their theology?

Immaculate Conception

I think that the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception needs to be clarified so that people don't think that conception makes one "un-immaculate". The doctrine means Mary was naturally conceived in the womb of her mother without "original sin". That leaves us needing a better understanding of the doctrine of original sin. I was taught that it does not mean some sort of fault inherited from the sin of Adam and Eve. It means that human beings are imperfect and prone to make bad judgements under the influence of their upbringing, experience, and personality. God delivers us from this tendency through the gift of grace which we are free to accept or not. Mary uniquely, because of her destiny was free from this human tendency. She like Jesus was so gifted with grace, from her conception, that she was able NOT to sin.

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

HI,

I THINK YOU'VE ANSWERED YOUR OWN QUESTION.

THE REST OF US, POOR BANISHED CHILDREN OF EVE, HAVE TO COPE WITH OUR NATURE AS BEST WE CAN WITH THE HELP OF GRACE.

YOU MIGHT FIND IN MY WEBSITE - https://sites.google.com/site/faithandcommonsense SOMETHING USEFUL.

ASKING FOR YOUR PRAYERS,

Catholic Idol Worship

I think that it is absolutely ridiculous the degree to which Catholics worship Mary. I believe she was a holy woman of God, but not some perfect/second savior. Let's not forget that the Immaculate Conception has no biblical basis at all. I know Catholics believe they are only venerating Mary, but the fact is that Mary has basilicas, religious orders, and churches dedicated to her. Aren't these things the things of God? I went to a basilica and who had the biggest picture? Mary. Who were the altars to? Earthly saints. Where was Jesus? On the sidelines. Catholics somehow believe that she is a second savior who can "deliver them from evil." Is God not enough? Is the blood of Jesus inadequate that we must pray 7 Hail Mary's for every one prayer to God? Why do we need all these saints when Jesus, the one and only perfect human, is really all that we need? Mary and saints were godly people, but they were still people whose entire goodness was based in God not themselves. Everyone needs the mercy of God constantly, including Mary. The Bible, not the Catechism, not Tradition, is the true foundation of Christianity. Man can make up whatever traditions he wants, but the Bible is holy Word of God given to us. Amen, I say to you, Jesus is one true Son of God and the only perfect human being. Pray to Him and no other. Give your hearts wholly unto Him and no other. For He is the one and only Almighty God.

Catholic idol worship.

It is apparent that you have not done your homework.
It is best to acquire some semblance of understanding prior to lashing out to fellow Christians.
It is fortunate that you were not here during the first 350 years of Christianity or you would not have been able to comment if something is biblical or not.
As for worship, there are too many people who worship the bible and not abide by the truth of The Church that Jesus personally established.
No one could claim to be a beleiver if he disputes the instructions and decisions of Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Problems with the immaculate conception

What does a catholic do when teachings of the Catholic church contradict the Scripture as with the claim that Mary was without sin while Romans 3:9,23 and 5:12 point to the fact that all of mankind is under sin?

Billboard of Joseph and Mary is beyond disgraceful

I just read the recent blog "Billboard of Mary (and Joseph) in bed isn't thought provoking; it's a confusing mess." Since it is in "preview mode" and currently doesn't allow comments, I am posting my comment about it here, since this blog was about the IMMACULATE one, Mary.

Why does U.S. Catholic always take this "soft and wimpy" approach whenever reports of sacrileges make the media? It seems that this magazine always basically says, whenever these kinds of so-called "works of art" come up for discussion: "It's not that bad, it's nothing to get upset over, We don't have THAT much of a problem with it, we like things that 'challenge', it's just we think it's in poor taste or not that good."

I read the blog and I looked at the painting. If we are Catholics and we love Our Lady and St Joseph, that we should be absolutely outraged. This is one of the most disgusting pieces of filth I have ever seen in my life. We shouldn't even give airtime to such filth other than that it was posted publicly. We ought to call it what it is- a SACRILEGE- and we should be on our knees begging God to forgive this terrible offense and to move the hearts of people away from such evil.

I say: this is not just bad, it's Satanic. If this is not the work of the devil, then what is?
