The entire faculty and staff at a Los Angeles elementary school have been reassigned following the allegations that two male teachers engaged in sexual misconduct with students.Los Angeles Unified School District superintendent John Deasy said the reassignement of the entire faculty was necessary in order “to clear the school from a cloud of distrust and suspicion stemming from the arrest.” NPR re

Taking "religious freedom" too far?

Wednesday, February 8, 2012
The recent HHS mandate has left many crying out that religious freedom is under attack and being trampled on from all sides, but is it possible to take our nation’s cries of “My religious liberty is being violated!” too far?

Detention center resisted by small town

Friday, February 3, 2012
Crete is thirty miles south of Chicago. I used to pass through it on the way to the Claretian’s high school seminary. It is a small, rather rural community, intent on maintaining its small town character as the Chicago megalopolis creeps south. Already it is joined into a congressional district represented by Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. of Chicago.

"I'm not concerned about the very poor": Romney's view from the top

Wednesday, February 1, 2012
The morning after a big win in the Florida primary, Mitt Romney is all over the headlines—but it’s not for his victory. Instead, it’s for remarks he made to CNN stating that he isn't concerned with the country's poor."I'm not concerned about the very poor." he said. "We have a safety net there. Remembering (and empowering) Haiti

Thursday, January 26, 2012
As with most large-scale natural disasters, we often have a quick and genuine response to help those in need. Donations immediately pour out as images of victims and mass destruction fill the media. Inevitably, time passes, we start to forget, and new disasters come along which need our attention. It’s been two years since a devastating earthquake killed more than 230,000 people in Haiti.

That's rotten, Apple

Wednesday, January 25, 2012
Apple shareholders are celebrating this week. Perhaps America’s most respected company, the computer, gadget and innovation manufacturer generated $46.3 billion in revenue last quarter and once again handily smoked the most optimistic predictions of Wall Street analysts. Its share price enjoyed a significant jump today that values the electronic company neck and neck with oil juggernaut Exxon.

Missing in action: Guilt for U.S. war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan

Wednesday, January 25, 2012
As I listened to the president frame his address last night around the "successful" wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I couldn't help but ask myself: What about the war crimes? What about torture, Abu Ghraib, drone strikes, "collateral damage," Guantanamo Bay? What about the Haditha massacre, which resulted in the deaths of 24 Iraqi civilians?

The state of Obama's address

Wednesday, January 25, 2012
Last night’s State of the Union address was the first time in a while that I’ve actually sat down and listened to President Obama speak about anything, which was likely true for many other Americans.

Enough already about the cruise ship

Tuesday, January 24, 2012
The Pew Research Center reports that the cruise ship that ran into the reef in Italy two weeks ago is the second most interesting story to the public. It’s also been the second most covered topic, as news outlet after news outlet has milked this accident for everything it’s worth. The amount of coverage is comical at this point.
