Lessons learned from the 2012 CSMG

Wednesday, February 15, 2012
Sitting in the airport as I prepare to leave Washington, D.C., I have a few moments to reflect on this week’s Catholic Social Ministry Gathering. A few final thoughts/observations to wrap up the week: 1. Civility and charity go a long way: In my job, controversy is commonplace. It usually makes for a good story, or gets people interested in reading about a topic they might otherwise pass over.

Polluting our nation's health

Wednesday, February 15, 2012
People have debated for years whether or not man-made manufacturing of pollutants has contributed to global climate change. However, three new studies have come out this week showing that high air pollution is at least having a negative impact on our nation’s health, if not our environment. These three studies suggest that pollution can be linked to harmful effects on our hearts and brains.

Finding a united voice in a diverse church

Tuesday, February 14, 2012
We’ve been hearing a lot lately about how Catholics are coming together over their opposition to the government mandate for contraceptive coverage in health care, with the tone generally implying just how unbelievable such a proposition sounds.

Do undocumented workers hurt or help the economy?

Tuesday, February 14, 2012
This has always been the chicken-and-egg question over unauthorized immigration. And the answer usually reflects where a person stands on immigration. Opponents are quick to argue that undocumented workers take jobs from the poor, while advocates respond most American workers don’t want those jobs.

Brother, can you spare $150?

Monday, February 13, 2012
Hey, a dime doesn’t go as far as it used to.But when it comes to understanding the realities of global poverty, it can be hard to get a handle on just how poor the poorest countries around the world are. We know the richest one percent makes the same amount per year as the world's poorest 57 percent, but what does that mean in terms we can relate to?

How can Catholics deal with being 'politically homeless'?

Sunday, February 12, 2012
The question of which political party is more in line with the teaching of the Catholic Church is always bound to spark some heated debate. Some make the argument that a Catholic can never vote for a Democrat, while others say the Republicans are woefully out of touch with the church’s ideals on a number of social issues. So where does that leave Catholic voters?

LA school seems to have learned something from the church's sex abuse scandal

Friday, February 10, 2012
The entire faculty and staff at a Los Angeles elementary school have been reassigned following the allegations that two male teachers engaged in sexual misconduct with students.Los Angeles Unified School District superintendent John Deasy said the reassignement of the entire faculty was necessary in order “to clear the school from a cloud of distrust and suspicion stemming from the arrest.” NPR re

Taking "religious freedom" too far?

Wednesday, February 8, 2012
The recent HHS mandate has left many crying out that religious freedom is under attack and being trampled on from all sides, but is it possible to take our nation’s cries of “My religious liberty is being violated!” too far?

Detention center resisted by small town

Friday, February 3, 2012
Crete is thirty miles south of Chicago. I used to pass through it on the way to the Claretian’s high school seminary. It is a small, rather rural community, intent on maintaining its small town character as the Chicago megalopolis creeps south. Already it is joined into a congressional district represented by Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. of Chicago.

"I'm not concerned about the very poor": Romney's view from the top

Wednesday, February 1, 2012
The morning after a big win in the Florida primary, Mitt Romney is all over the headlines—but it’s not for his victory. Instead, it’s for remarks he made to CNN stating that he isn't concerned with the country's poor."I'm not concerned about the very poor." he said. "We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I'll fix it. I'm not concerned about the very rich. They're doing just fine.
