Atheist believes in God's wife

OK, believes "in" might be a stretch, but an atheist scholar does believe that the Judeo-Christian God may have been married, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.

That there were many gods (and goddesses) worshiped in ancient Israel is no surprise if you've read a bit of the Old Testament or are even familiar with the Ten Commandments. University of Exeter lecturer Francesca Stavrakopoulou, however, says that biblical and archeological evidence point to the Hebrew God being paired with a goddess who was worshiped in his temple in Jerusalem. The Daily Mail quotes another article she wrote:

"In the Book Of Kings, we're told that a statue of Asherah was housed in the temple and that female temple personnel wove ritual textiles for her.

In fact, although the Bible condemns all of these practices, the biblical texts suggest that goddess worship was a thriving feature of high-status religion in Jerusalem.

What, then, was her relationship to Yahweh? Ancient texts, amulets, and figurines unearthed here reveal that she was a powerful fertility goddess.

But perhaps most significant of all, Asherah was also the wife of El, the high god at Ugarit  - a god who shares much in common with Yahweh. Given the evidence within the Bible that she was worshipped in the temple in Jerusalem, might she have played the role of a divine wife in ancient Israel too?"

Is this fallacy to be dismissed, an oddity from history, or a threat to our monotheism? Or could it be an admission that religion evolves with our understanding of God and a good reason to stop calling YHWH "he"?

God, gods and god's wives

All religion is bunk.
Did/does your god have a penis and balls?
If not why is your god masculine.
It all stinks of machismo and paternalistic dominance.
Religion:
It's all based on exaggerated tales, legends and lies.
It's all a con by the cunning over the gullible.
It's to control the impressionable to get their services, so that the rich and powerful remain so.

Who I am is not important.
But many of you and the rabid religious would have your hench men kill me if you could.
Lovely people the pious are...

Why would a maker of the whole universe want a nonstop 24/7 songs of praise of HIS greatness from an insignificant species on a tiny planet, which is destined for termination in a few million years from now.

Grovel and prove how much you really really believe so that you can get your god's pat on your head and go to heaven.

Religion is the refuge of the oppressed and the weapon of choice by the oppressors. Look no further than North Africa, it's still where Europe was 500 years ago.

Religious doctrine is a sham.

Go on, carry on cutting off bits of boy's willies and mutilating girl's genitals to offer gods a sacrifice or to obey a law thought up by some perverted bloke on a drug induced shamen dream trip.

You bury your heads in fables.

Goddess Sophia Wisdom Wife of God Jehovah

I worship Proverbs 8 Wisdom as a Goddess (Sophia) A.K.A. Alchemy. Her Consort is Jehovah the Lord Hunter God. Their Son is Yeshua Christ. The Goddess Sophia was, "Brought up as a Master Craftsman At Jehovah's Side." Proverbs 8

I have now reread Proverbs 8.

I have now reread Proverbs 8. I do not see where it says that her son is Yeshua Christ. What verse tells us that?

Secondly, when writing the Old Testament, the Old Testament writers drew on images used around them. Borrowing the image of a Wisdom Goddess from neighboring cultures, the Old Testament writers revealed an aspect of God that, present from the beginning is something to aspire to. The Old Testament writers used the classic literary technique of personification.

Dishonest Reporting

Or how about the fact that this atheist's miraculous "discovery" isn't really news at all? Deuteronomy, among other books, talks about this female diety and orders Israelites to tear down alters to her.

This is the 20th article I've read that utterly fails to mention this FACT. Sure, some wayward Israelites, during a period of wandering from God, may have worshipped idols.

TELL US SOMETHING WE DON'T KNOW FROM SUNDAY SCHOOL.

Typical atheist. Always presenting half the story - their half.

This is like trying to figure

This is like trying to figure out who would win in a fight between The Hulk and Superman. People debating about fictional characters, it's fun to watch :)
