Moonstruck no more

Just as my February column on the demise of the space program hits the mail. the president's proposed budget cuts the prospect of a new moon landing.

As I write in my column, I just don't understand why we are more interested in fighting over what's under the ground than we are about what's above it–way above it, that is. The exploration of space could open all kinds of horizons for us, including religious ones, but we are hell-bent on staying earthbound.

We've got hundreds of billions for wars, weapons, and the false security they bring, but we can't cough up pennies for an inspiring project that has the capacity to unite human beings all over the world in wonder.

We need to get our heads back in the clouds…
