It started with a tweet. "Was thinking that if each of us helped just 1 person find a job, we could start making a dent in unemployment. You game?" Mark Stelzner wrote to his 700 Twitter followers, most of them in human resources, at the end of January.
By June more than 500,000 messages had been sent out over social networking sites Twitter, FaceBook, and LinkedIn connecting the unemployed with people who want to help. The grassroots movement, called JobAngels, simply asks that each participant help one other person find a job, whether through job leads or simply support.
"When someone loses his or her job, it is possibly the loneliest feeling in the world," Deirdre Honner, a JobAngels leader told Workforce Management. "Just to have somebody there with you is one of the best things we can offer as people."
