Colbert, Kmiec, and the marriage question

Stephen Colbert, the Catholic, defended the institution of marriage against the conservative-growing-more-liberal-everyday Douglas Kmiec. Kmiec’s argument: leave marriage to religion and acknowledge civil unions for everybody legally. It’s an interesting argument, based on a strict separation of church and state, though no doubt controversial.

The topic may be serious, but the interview is just plain funny. Colbert unintentionally cracks himself up—the first time I’ve seen him get close to going out of character.
