From Catholic schools to Congress

Here's a good reason to be proud of Catholic education during Catholic school’s week: Almost 10 percent of our Senators and Representatives in the 111th Congress went to Jesuit colleges, Catholic News Services reports.

There are 52 total Jesuit school alums, including 11 in the Senate and 41 in the House. And they are leaders in Congress, too: House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-MD.; House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-OH; and Senate Assistant Majority Leader Richard Durbin, D-IL.

Of particular Jesuit note, new Representative Joseph Gao (R-LA) was actually a Jesuit seminarian before deciding to go into politics, and Senator Bob Casey, Jr. (D-PA) taught for a year through Jesuit Volunteer Corps. after graduating from the College of Holy Cross.

A tribute to Catholic Education

It is commendable that many politicians and industry leaders are the product of Catholic education. Catholic education helps its students seek the truth...a life-long journey. It does not brian wash and make robots. This is a tribute to Catholic education. It teaches people how to think and make good decisions. And while many might then use that ability to disagree with Timothy+, Jerry and the US bishops (I say US since in Europe they are not a single issue Church)so be it.

Ashamed

I am ashamed of the significant number of Catholic pro-abortion choice politicians.

I know liberal Catholics think these politicians have it right in all areas except abortion, but for me that is like saying I think this politician is great except he supports racial segregation. For many a person killing the unborn is not considered anywhere near as offensive as someone who utters a racial joke.

The Jesuits

Greetings,

Well, the Jesuit training that you mention may explain the “ I am personally opposed to that particular belief but I cannot impose my beliefs on others” mentality that is rampant by those who were trained by the Jesuits in Congress.

If only the Jesuits would be like they were in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.

As they are now, they are the laughing stock of Catholicism, save for our beloved Cardinal Dulles of recent memory and other notable exceptions, as well.

As far as Catholic education is concerned, pray for my wife who is contending with the very real possibility that she may not have employment due the Obama administration’s encroachment on religious freedom, which would force the Church to close all Catholic schools at the diocesean level.

Moreover, pray that there will still be Catholic hospitals, which comprise one third of all the hospitals in the United States, due to the same malicious encroachment on religious freedom by the Obama administration, as it pertains to the Prevention First Act and FOCA.
