Judge says parish money in investment fund part of abuse settlement

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The Diocese of Wilmington, Del., plans to appeal a federal bankruptcy judge's ruling that the funds deposited by parishes, schools and other Catholic entities into its investment fund are property of the diocese and subject to distribution to victims of clergy sexual abuse. Judge Christopher Sontchi said in his June 28 decision that the entire $120 million pooled investment account held in the name of the diocese should be considered diocesan assets, even though the diocese said it has only $45 million of its own money in the account.

Senators urged not to repeal policy on abortions in military hospitals

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Requiring personnel in military hospitals to perform or participate in abortions would place "a very heavy burden" on those in the armed forces who value human life, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the U.S. Archdiocese for the Military Services told U.S. senators. "The United States is one of the few nations in the world based on self-evident principles: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," the archbishop said in a June 17 letter.

Pope taps Swiss bishop for Christian unity; Cardinal Kasper to retire

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI has chosen Swiss Bishop Kurt Koch of Basel to be the new president of Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and of the Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews. Bishop Koch, 60, will succeed German Cardinal Walter Kasper, 77, who has been at the council for 11 years -- first as secretary, then as president since 2001. Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, said the appointment would be published July 1.

Murder of gubernatorial candidate draws church condemnation
